Storage Space Solutions for Your Charleston Custom Home

If your closets are overflowing, your kitchen cabinets are cluttered, or you cannot find a place for all of your bathroom toiletries, storage space should be at the top of your wish list for your home renovation project. PRD’s team of custom home designers compiled four storage space solutions for some of the most commonly cluttered areas we’ve encountered in our Charleston home renovations. Follow along to find out how to declutter, organize, and add depth to your home.

Enhance Your “Drop Zone”

The perfect time to enhance your entryway or “drop zone” is during your custom home renovation. Firstly, we suggest assessing your family’s storage needs. Are you looking for everyday shoe and jacket storage, or something larger that can accommodate sports and hobby equipment, rain gear, and pet supplies? Once you have decided, you can dive into the custom home design process.

Mudroom and “drop zone” storage space solutions are endless, and our team has worked with just about all of them. Out of all the options available, these are some of our custom home designers‘ favorite solutions:

  • Installing a built-in bench during your custom home renovation is a great way to boost the functionality of your entryway. A bench provides the perfect place to tie your shoes, welcome guests, and wrangle the kids while offering additional storage within or below the bench. Consider making the top removable to hold large items, or adding drawers to store shoes and other daily items.
  • Another option is to install built-in cubbies. These are great for family homes, as each family member’s belongings can be organized and stored in one place. Cubbies are excellent for everyday storage and can be customized to fit your needs. Consider adding a drawer for shoes and an enclosed cabinet with hooks for raincoats and jackets.
  • For custom homes or large-scale home renovation projects, we suggest installing a large closet in your entryway to hold seasonal clothing. A spacious closet can hold your heavier jackets, sweaters, and rain gear if needed. This storage solution will keep your bedroom closets clutter-free during the warm southern months.

Utilize Your Stairway For Storage Space

The space under your stairs is often wasted or entirely unused. PRD’s custom home designers recommend maximizing your home’s storage potential by creatively utilizing the space beneath your stairway during your custom home renovation.

One of our favorite ways to take advantage of this space is by installing custom shelving. This will not only provide storage for larger items like winter coats and camping gear, but it will also create a hidden storage space. By adding a concealed or jib door, you can maintain a clean and uncluttered look while still having easy access to the items you use less frequently.

A jib door is flush mounted right into the wall and has no hardware essentially making it invisible. Our custom home designers used a job door in a recent project to create an invisible entryway. However, this solution could easily be used to create a hidden cabinet or closet as this clever storage solution is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Storage Space Soultions: Custom Cabinetry

If your countertops are cluttered with appliances and utensils, then custom cabinetry can provide the perfect storage space solution. This design feature gives your home a sleek and polished look while providing additional storage space.

While custom cabinetry is an obvious fit for kitchen storage, it doesn’t have to be limited to just this area of the house. This is how our custom home designers implement cabinetry in different areas of our clients’ homes.

The Kitchen

The kitchen has plenty of room for custom cabinets, but effectively incorporating them is key to optimizing your kitchen space. The custom home designers at PRD Custom Homes & Interiors design-build firm suggest pull-out shelves, lazy Susan shelving, and vertical dividers for baking sheets and cutting boards. These additions will increase storage space and help keep your kitchen utensils more organized.

The Living Space

Storage is essential for any home’s living space, whether you are storing extra fluffy blankets or buckets of children’s toys. With custom cabinetry, you can increase your living space’s functionality and add depth to the space with expert craftsmanship. During your home renovation, consider adding built-in enclosed storage around your media center or fireplace to hide away your tangled cords and extra devices, and attached shelving to display family photos and other decorative items.

The Bathroom

The key to keeping your bathroom organized and clutter-free is easy-to-reach storage solutions. Custom cabinetry in the bathroom allows you to plan your storage around your belongings, not the other way around. We suggest installing deep drawers in your vanity to hold large hair tools, adding built-in shelving for towels, linens, and toiletries, and including cutouts for outlets and wires.

The Perfect Pantry

A pantry can add a touch of luxury to your kitchen and free up a lot of space. When designing the perfect pantry for your custom home, it’s important to consider your family’s needs and preferences to determine which type of storage would work best for you.

For instance, do you prefer basket, drawer, or shelving storage? Shelving is great for larger items and can help keep everything organized and visible, while drawer storage is often preferred for housing small kitchen utensils such as silverware, spatulas, and baking supplies. Baskets and bins are great for grouping ingredients rather than having them scattered around. Take a look through your kitchen to decide which kitchen storage solution will work best for you.
