Reading Nook Haven

Check out this AMAZING reading nook we just finished in a custom build project on Daniel Island

Few rooms in a home feature the ownerโ€™s personality quite like a reading nook. From cozy corners to built-in retreat, the reading nook can serve many purposes.

As Charleston interior designers, we believe in making custom home designs personal, which is why we wanted to show off this custom reading nook from one of PRDโ€™s recent clients. It is absolutely packed with personality and custom built-ins that we designed to fit the clientโ€™s lifestyle.ย

Here are some of the aspects of this reading nook haven that make it special:

Built-in Benches

Clients frequently come to us with a goal of having more storage space in their home. Itโ€™s important to find opportunities for  storage space in places such as reading nooks to make them practical and fun.

The custom built-in benches that we designed for this reading nook include pull out drawers for linens or kidsโ€™ toys. We love designing spaces like this in homes because they utilize space beyond their initial purpose. These benches are the key to making this reading nook comfortable and cozy, and the hidden storage is an extra benefit.

Custom Upholstery & Finishings

Our Charleston interior design team aims to add a personal touch wherever we can when we are building new homes or designing luxury renovations. A reading nook should serve as a place where you can curl up with a good book on a rainy day or sneak away for some peace and quiet.ย

Our design team will customize each space in your home down to the fixtures and finishings, including custom upholstery and window treatments. The pops of color on the pillows in this reading nook contrast against the subtle gray custom bench cushion and crisp white millwork. With the warm pecky cypress exposed beams and soft light filtered through the custom plantation shutters, itโ€™s hard to deny the welcoming atmosphere of this space.

Fun fact: The flooring was reclaimed white oak that we found in the top of an old shop building located on King Street in downtown Charleston.

(Sort of) Space to Unplug

This reading nook includes an entertainment center and TV as a place where kids could hang out and watch television. We even included gaming ports and hidden charging stations to recharge while you relax!

Tucked away on the other side of the nook, we designed a storage center, pecky cypress bookshelf, and a desk for a quiet workspace. We loved working with the quirky corners and ceiling lines in this space, using the angles to accent the new design.ย

Set the Mood with Lighting

It goes without saying that lighting is important in a reading nook. In this room, we have designed multiple lighting options including recessed lighting, ambient lighting from wall sconces, and plenty of natural light.

Natural light is the best light to set the tone in the room for reading, relaxing, and working from home.. We added custom plantation shutters to this reading nook so that our client can control the amount and direction of the natural light coming into the room. The polished nickel wall sconces flanking the windows provide ambient lighting on a dimmer for tasking lighting.
